UNM SA+P invites you to the following lecture:
Bradley Cantrell is a landscape architect and scholar known for his contributions to integrating computation, responsive technologies, and ecological infrastructures in the design of the territory. He has held academic appointments at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, The Rhode Island School of Design, and the Louisiana State University Robert Reich School of Landscape Architecture. As a professor and the current Chair of the Department of Landscape Architecture at the University of Virginia, he has pushed the boundaries of how landscapes are designed, understood, and experienced.
Cantrell’s work bridges the gap between traditional landscape practices and nascent technologies transforming the field. His research explores how computation can create responsive, adaptive, and resilient landscapes that address complex environmental challenges. His decade of experience and research in Southern Louisiana points to a series of methodologies that develop modeling, simulation, and embedded computation modes that express and engage the complexity of overlapping physical, cultural, and economic systems. His approach to landscape architecture is not just theoretical; it is deeply rooted in practical applications that have redefined the capabilities of the discipline.
He is the author of the publication “Digital Drawing for Landscape Architecture,” a seminal text that has become a cornerstone in the education of landscape architects. The book, co-authored with Wes Michaels, provides a comprehensive guide to digital tools and techniques, making it an essential resource for students and practitioners. Another significant work, “Responsive Landscapes,” co-authored with Justine Holzman, delves into the potentials of interactive systems and adaptive design, offering a forward-thinking perspective on how constructed landscapes can respond to and shape ecological processes.
He is a sought-after lecturer internationally and has been a driving force behind numerous groundbreaking projects that blend ecological sensitivity and computational thinking. His work has been recognized with numerous awards, and his influence is evident in the new generation of landscape architects who are redefining the discipline through innovation and a commitment to procedural and relational design.

We are updating our Strategic Plan!
We are happy to announce that we updated our NMASLA strategic plan last weekend! With the guidance and expertise of ASLA's Barbara Fles, we have developed a new roadmap that truly reflects who we are as an organization and aligns with our goals!
To celebrate the work of our sessions, we gathered with some of our members and friends for a happy hour at Gravity Bound Brewing Company.
We thank Barbara for her exceptional guidance, moderation, and support throughout the planning process, to Pland Collaborative for being a great host, our members, our sponsors, and everyone who has been part of this journey and made this achievement possible!
The Living Schoolyards Act
ASLA helped Senator Martin Heinrich (NM) reintroduce the Living Schoolyards Act to reinvigorate outdoor learning spaces. This bill would provide planning and installation grants for landscape architects to reshape elementary and secondary schoolyards into resilient outdoor environments for learning and recreation.
“The Living Schoolyards Act will enable schools across the nation to design and implement proven nature-based solutions that have resounding effects on academic performance, social justice, and equitable access to green spaces,” wrote Gregory Miller, PLA, FASLA, of the New Mexico Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects.
Join the upcoming webinar “Schoolyard Design, Green Infrastructure, Green Building Standards” on May 25, 2:00-3:00pm ET. This webinar will feature Gregory Miller, PLA, FASLA, of the New Mexico Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects, discussing how good design can maximize the benefits of living schoolyards.
April is WLAM!
April is World Landscape Architecture Month! Let's celebrate the role of landscape architecture in shaping healthy, resilient, and beautiful places for all, advocate for the profession, and inspire the next generation of landscape architects. Check out our social media posts during this celebratory month!
And the 2023 Jeff Harnar Award goes to: Valle de Oro!
Valle de Oro has won the top award for contemporary architecture from the 2023 Jeff Harnar Awards! Surroundings lead both the landscape visioning during the design-build RFP and the subsequent design of the external environs for the new Valle de Oro Wildlife Refuge Visitor’s Center. This is the Southwest’s first urban wildlife refuge, and we are honored to have collaborated with Formative Architecture, Weddle Gilmore, and Biohabitats on this important project for New Mexico. A new visitor’s center and demonstration wetland overlooks the wildlife refuge and gives visitors and the surrounding communities a world-class educational event facility for the region.
