LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear NMASLA members,

I hope you enjoy our first quarter newsletter for 2021. Richard has been very busy dreaming up informative new content, like a “current projects dashboard” to let our members what everyone is up to these days, and invite you to contribute anything you are working on as well. Also, several of our members have recently been showcased in magazines and newspapers at the national and local level, which is always great for our relatively small state landscape architecture chapter. New Mexico represent!

Please let us know of any other ideas you may have brewing for our newsletter, and send us projects to potentially profile in upcoming email blasts or future quarterly news. Thank you, as always, for supporting NMASLA and the landscape architecture profession through your membership with ASLA.

RECENTLY PUBLISHED…..

With these articles, we are initiating a new feature of the NMASLA Newsletter in which will highlight member projects that have been included in recent publications. If you or your firm have such a project, please send it to me at glenclcark6517@yahoo.com and get the recognition you deserve!

The March 2021 issue of MARTHA STEWART LIVING featured a residential garden located in the in Santa Fe foothills designed by Surroundings Studio, proving once again our high desert can be just as colorful as any garden.

In the Monday, February 22, 2021 ALBUQUERQUE JOURNAL, featured an article titled Xeriscape not Zeroscape, explaining how low water gardens don’t have to just be a sea of gravel, but can be lush and verdant. It just takes the right plan, plants, and a good design(er). Landscape Architects from My Landscape Coach and Serquis & Associates were featured.

2021 Jeff Harnar Awards

The JEFF HARNAR AWARDS program was created by Garrett Thornburg in 2007 to honor the memory of Jeff Harnar and help continue his groundbreaking work in the area of contemporary design. In 2018, the award program was expanded to include Unbuilt Work and Landscape Architecture. In 2020, the program was further expanded to include the following six categories:

• Contemporary Architecture in the Southwest ($200 Application fee, $10,000 Prize)

• An Emerging Practice in New Mexico ($150 Application fee, $5,000 Prize)

• Unbuilt Architecture ($150 Application fee, $2,500 Prize)

• Unbuilt Landscape Architecture ($150 Application fee, $2,500 Prize)

• Student Architecture Award ($1,500 Prize)

• Student Landscape Architecture Award ($1,500 Prize)

Five of the six JEFF HARNAR AWARDS. are open to submissions for work designed for the Four Corners states (AZ, CO, NM, UT). The emerging Practice Award is reserved for firms of architecture and landscape architecture in New Mexico.

Project Dashboard

Another new feature for the NMASLA NEWSLETTER is a Project Dashboard showcasing the projects in New Mexico firms, from those recently awarded, in design, under construction, or recently finished. This will be updated in the Spring and Fall Newsletters, so if you are not listed now, please send me your information for the next update.

UNM Department of Landscape Architecture

This semester, students are exploring timely topics in studios and through community outreach programs.

Green New Deal Superstudio: Katya Crawford and Kathy Kambic are working with students to explore water infrastructure and systems in the Albuquerque metro area.

Design and Planning Assistance Center: Anthony Fettes is working with a team of MLA and MArch students to re-envision the El Camino Real Academy Charter School in the South Valley, focusing on refining ideas generated in the 2020 DPAC Studio with a potential design-build opportunity to support development of outdoor classrooms. Up in Santa Fe, Michaele Pride is working with an interdisciplinary team as well and several local partners to generate ideas for the Santa Fe Midtown Campus.
